Where did that name come from?

The 'Ashby' part of Ashby-de-la-Zouch is from the 9th century when the Danes were raiding and then settled here, naming the place 'Ascebi' meaning 'village by the Ash trees' or 'Aski's village'.

Within a hundred years of the Norman Conquest the manor of Ashby was acquired by Alan de Zouch of Breton in France and his name was used to distinguish the town from others named Ashby. The next two hundred years saw the wooden manor house replaced with stone.
